Pregnancy: a New Chapter

Pregnancy is a time for wonder for many couples. It heralds the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. If there were fertility issues or there were illnesses causing infertility then this conception is a blessing. Pregnancy can be a mystery but there are a tremendous amount of resources available to help inform the least savvy of potential parent.

The female body is designed to become reproductive at the onset of puberty and every month an ovary produces an egg. The egg’s goal is to become fertilized and implanted in the uterus and this happens when the egg becomes fertilized by the semen. If it is not fertilized it gets removed naturally by the body through the process called menstruation.

Early pregnancy can be a dangerous time for the embryo. If the implantation occurs in the fallopian tubes it is called an ectopic pregnancy and it becomes a danger to the mother to be. Ectopic implantation can not be a viable pregnancy and must be discovered early. As the embryo grows, if it is not in its proper place within the uterus, it begins to burst from the surrounding tissue and can fetal, resulting in the death of the mother.

Pregnancy signs vary, some women report nausea and vomiting while others have no problems at all, and feel completely normal. In some rare cases the mother had no idea she was pregnant until she began having labor pains, but these are very rare indeed. Normally early pregnancy signs are a conbination of missed period, tender breasts, and sometimes a hormonal surge.

A situation that sometimes occurs between partners it’s the so called “sympathetic pregnancy”. A sympathetic pregnancy is one where the spouse gets the symptoms that the mother has, or in some cases, should be having. These “phantom” pains are very real for the male partner. The nausea, pains, fatigue are all convincing signs that pregnancy is not as easy as one might think, but a very difficult and painful but wonderful experience.

Pregnancy is divided into stages called trimesters (from Latin: trimestris) which means “three months”. These trimesters are roughly three months long and are used for marking the changes that the woman’s body and the child go through. As each trimesters come close to the end, the woman comes closer and closer to the due date of the child’s birth. Nine months can seem like a very long time but as many mothers will confirm when later look back on how fast the time went by, how quickly the big day arrived.

Is it normal to be nervous about birth? Yes, of course it is. Pregnancy takes a huge toll on a woman’s body and the idea of such a large object coming out is bound to cause some apprehension. Thanks to modern medicine most births go quite well. It is not like a century ago when a woman gave birth in a field and then continued work. The birth may not be text book perfect but in the end it is well worth all of the worries and work.
