Unexplained Infertility Explanations and Reasons
Each day couples around the world find themselves at a loss when they have difficulty becoming pregnant. An even worse discovery, after countless tests are run, is finding out there is an unexplained infertility. This is a crushing blow because there is no way to adequately explain why the pregnancy is not happening. Before giving up hope, a couple is advised to try different methods over the course of a couple of years.
A visit to a new doctor always involves a list or questionnaire of past medical history. This is especially true of unexplained infertility. The female will need to keep an accurate history of her monthly cycles as well as any pertinent diseases or medical conditions in her past. The male will need to list any accidents or diseases that may affect his reproductive capabilities.
When infertility issues arise the gynecological specialist will order three types of tests in order to determine the cause before issuing a diagnosis of “unexplained infertility”. The first test is to take a complete history of ovulation (periods) and have lab work drawn to ensure that the proper levels of hormones required for conception are present.
Hysterosalpingogram. This test is performed by the radiology staff at the hospital and it is an x-ray being taken after dye is put into the uterus through an IV. The radiologist and fertility specialist can then see if the fallopian tubes have any blockage or if there is any damage to the uterus that may be causing the infertility problems.
Another test is for sperm analysis. The sperm is analyzed so that the lab can see how high his sperm count is as well as the motility of the sperm. The higher the count and motility, the better the chances of fertilization.
Unfortunately there is a bit of panic that follows at the diagnosis of unexplained infertility but in reality it can be any number of known reasons that causes it. It can be anything from the eggs not being able to be fertilized by the sperm or even something being wrong on a genetic level between the two partners. Unexplained infertility can also apply to after the egg has been fertilized but fails to implant normally in the uterus or maybe a wide variety of other reasons all coming together to produce the same result: a failed pregnancy.
Unexplained infertility is not the end of the world. Yes, it can be emotionally devastating for each month to pass without pregnancy occurring but there are alternatives. The fertility specialist may recommend artificial insemination or even using donors for both the sperm and the egg. Even if there is no possible way for the woman to carry a child there are surrogate parents or even the possibility of adoption.
