Nutrition during Pregnancy Does Not Mean Eating for Two!

Nutrition during pregnancy is a very popular topic as mothers obviously want what is best for their unborn child yet do not want to go overboard either. The old adage of ‘eating for two’ has now thankfully been dispelled with a lot of prenatal education. Doctors across the world are telling pregnant women then nutrition during pregnancy means healthy choices not doubling up on cheeseburgers and fries.

It is common sense. The ‘other person’ whom you are technically eating for will weigh a maximum of 10% of your body weight and less most of the time. So perhaps you can eat 10% more when you are pregnant which translates into a maximum of 350 calories extra a day.

Even with those 350 calories, it is important you make a healthy choice. A fat-free yogurt cup or a smoothie is much better than a large serving of ice cream. A grilled chicken salad is so much wiser than a bucket of greasy, fried chicken.

Excuses, Excuses

Many women understand the basic tenets of nutrition during pregnancy but find it as an excuse to fall off the bandwagon and eat those extra donuts they eye all the time. They feel they are going to put on weight anyways, and they are going to buy loose clothing so why not indulge a little.

While it is perfectly okay to give into cravings every now and then and who doesn’t feel like ice cream when pregnant, it is also important to think of the long run. Even if you are not at risk for gestational diabetes during your pregnancy, if you elevate your blood sugar that much, you just could end up having it or develop type 2 diabetes or have an extra large baby and require a necessary cesarean section.

Also, if you neglect proper nutrition during pregnancy, you will have all those extra unwanted pounds to get rid off after the baby. And if you thought exercising while pregnant was hard, try squeezing in the time for it between naps, nursing and colic.

Nutrition during pregnancy doesn’t mean you stay on a tough diet and deprive yourself of everything. It just means making sensible choices with occasional treats. This way not only will you have a healthier baby and pregnancy, you will also have less stress about that bulging tummy after the baby arrives. Good luck!
