A Brief Introduction to the Yob Culture
As if there weren’t enough things for you to worry about your kids getting involved with, there is a new social fad in Europe called the Yob culture. This is defined by the word boy spelled backwards and usually involves a small group of young males who have bonded over some desire to be lawless and rebellious. There isn’t a lot of information available yet about these kinds of activities in the Unites States, but you can be sure that you will be hearing more about it soon.
To get a better idea of what this type of teen sub-culture entails, the movie A Clockwork Orange is an accurate, yet graphic portrayal. In the movie, as in the Yob of real life, groups of intoxicated young males terrorize their town - wreaking havoc on anybody that they encounter. Comprised of “thugs” and “hooligans,” these groups of teens thrive on a lack of respect for anything that is decent and lawful. They have been known to pick random strangers on the street as their victims of physical assault. Their groups have been known to cause vandalism on random property with no pattern or reason for their actions.
These groups thrive on the idea of a “mob mentality” - or “group think,” the term that psychologists use to refer to this phenomenon. This idea is characterized by a strong sense of conformity to the group that one is with, causing individual members of the group to self-censor their dissenting thoughts and opinions. With this mentality, the leader has ultimate authority and the group members typically adhere to the leader’s demands. Dissenters are normally coerced into conforming to the group’s ideals and actions and, as a group, there is a sense of superiority and invulnerability.
Many citizens feel helpless when this type of activity springs up in their neighborhood because it is so unexpected. Without being prepared for it there is no way to react in an effort to thwart the outbursts and often times bystanders are simply left to stand and watch the violence, and then try to pick up the pieces afterwards. It is very difficult to police an activity that doesn’t make itself apparent until it’s too late.
At this point, there is not a noteworthy presence of this culture with the United States. The best thing that parents can do is to keep the lines of communication open with your kids and let them know that there are serious problems with this kind of behavior and equip them to make their own good decisions.
