Building Confidence In Low Self Esteem Teenagers
Perhaps one of the most challenging characteristics that any parent has to instill in his or her child is a positive image of the self. Building self esteem in teenagers is rather tricky, as this is when peer pressure is at its highest and external influences play a major role in personality development. Low self esteem teenagers are more likely to have a hard time coping smoothly with adulthood, compared with somebody who’s had a positive view of himself early on.
Signs Of Low Self Esteem Teenagers
Often, low self esteem teenagers are avoidant of interaction with others and keep mostly to themselves; but this can’t really be used to generalize any teen that prefers to do things by himself. Here are the other telltale identifiers of low esteem teenagers.
1. Does your teen avoid making eye contact when you talk him?
Shifty eyes in a normal person and failure to make eye contact often means two things: he is lying, or he is uncomfortable connecting with the person he is speaking with.
2. Does your teen brush off compliments?
Low self esteem teenagers often cannot take a compliment with a simple “thank you.” More often than not, they will contradict the praise or deny that it’s due them. For example, if you compliment your teen for his high grades, he will say something like “No, I just got lucky this time.”
3. Is your teen often impatient, angry, and frustrated at anything and everything?
When a person does not feel good about who he is, it is expected that he will also not like anything and everything around him. This behavior in low self esteem teenagers is often misunderstood and met with hostility, thus, making him feel more inferior than ever before. The best you can do as a parent is try to find out where the anger is coming from (But don’t pry!) and seek ways to discuss it calmly.
4. Is your teen very sensitive to jokes and always takes things personally?
Simple jokes can easily be misunderstood as a hurtful statement by anybody who has an ill image of himself. Be very careful with jokes about physical appearance and school performance, and be extra wary of making outward comparisons, especially with his siblings.
Most parents deal with low self esteem teenagers by choosing not to deal with them at all. It’s not just a phase and will not pass, unless you help do something about it. Forcing your teenager to be more active in school and make more friends will only make it worse.
The best you can do is to foster a loving and accepting home environment, and to encourage your teen to develop his strengths. There is no one way to deal with low self esteem teenagers, but one thing’s for sure: you can always give them love.
