Glasses or Contacts: Which One Is Right For You?

Someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Seeing is believing. The list goes on and on with metaphors describing the sense of sight. It may not be perfect but it can be corrected with a little help from corrective lenses. Be it glasses or contacts, seeing is right around the corner.

Glasses are lenses held in place by a wire or plastic frame and come in a variety of shapes, colors and styles. They are used for near-sightedness (not being able to see things in the distance very clearly, also called myopia), far-sightedness (not being able to see things close very clearly, also called hyperopia) or there is presbyopia (when things are blurry at reading distance). If the eye condition is a combination of the myopic, hyperopic and presbyopic then a special lens is needed. This lens is called bifocals. There are even trifocals. In the past the lenses were pieced together and sometimes were problematic for the wearer due to the delineated lines. Now there are lenses called progressive additional lenses that all three zones are gradually merged together without the annoying lines of demarcation. The benefit to glasses is that once the initial cost is paid, there is no reoccurring cost to owning them. There is no need for special solutions for cleaning the lenses and allergies do not play a factor in their wear. Not to mention, the wearer does not have to stick anything into their eye.

Contacts are lenses that go onto the cornea of the eye. They are great for people on the go that do not want to keep up with glasses. They do not require prescription sunglasses in order to shield the eyes. They also can come in a variety of colors should the wearer decide to change eye color. They do require maintenance though in the form of cleaning and there is a tendency for the eye to become dry. Those people who play or compete in a variety of sports usually prefer contacts.

Better vision is attainable without resorting to surgery. Both contacts and glasses offer the visually impaired a clearer picture of the world that is often a welcome relief. Whether one is chosen over the other, both work in the same way. By correcting visual impairments and allowing the individual to have better eyesight.
