Illuminating the Mysterious World of Optometry

At first, there was someone with an injury. He looked around to see who could help him. One person stepped forward and decided to heal the sick. This was the first doctor. From this first doctor came a second and a third but they did not want to be the same sort of doctor as the first. They wanted to specialize. And that is how doctors in specialized fields of medicine were born. Okay so not really but it is easy to see the point. Where vision is concerned there are many confusing positions held and it is easy to become a bit dazed with the different titles.

At one time or another, most people need a professional in the vision care field. The degree at which they need them that specifies what professional is needed. The Optician is a person who has been trained in a technical program to assist with eyewear needs. She can help fit glasses, train new wearers on the handling of contacts and can also make and repair broken glasses. She works in conjunction with an Optometrist or an Ophthalmologist. The Optometrist (O.D.) is a graduate of a professional program after eight years. He or she can give eye exams, administer tests, perform minor procedures and write eyewear prescriptions. She can also write prescriptions for medications for vision ailments. The Ophthalmologist (D.O. or M.D.) is an actual medical doctor with over twelve years of schooling. She is the one a patient goes to if they need a complicated surgery performed on the eye. She can also give eye exams as well as write prescriptions.

The hardest part of an office visit to an eye care professional is decided on what is needed. Once that is taken care of it is only a matter of the exam and providing a brief history of any family illness or vision ailments. The initial eye visit does take time and a variety of tests will be performed. It never hurts to write down any questions that might be thought of beforehand and take with you to the office visit.

A good professional can answer the questions. It is also advisable to brush up on common tests that might be performed and what is deemed necessary, and what is merely a way to make money from the pocket of the patient or the insurance carrier. If there is any doubt as to which professional is needed, a call to a primary care physician might alleviate any questions. No matter which professional is seen, all are dedicated to making sure your eyesight is good for years to come.
