Is Laser Surgery the Right Solution for You?

In recent years, great advances have been made in Optometry. Laser surgery has given people the choice between wearing corrective lenses or not. It is not an easy choice to consider due to an initial queasiness over the thought of something being done to the eye. It is our natural reaction to cringe from these things due to countless horror stories of foreign objects ending eyesight. Ophthalmologists have the chore of educating consumer son what LASIK surgery actually is and what the predicted benefits will be.

LASIK surgery or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis is a surgical procedure where a laser is used to change the shape of the cornea. A knife creates a flap and the laser is used through a computer to change the stroma of the eye. The flap is then put back into place. The surgery is done in an office and when it is complete, the patient is allowed to go home. The actual surgery is done while the patient is awake. The doctor might give some medicine to help relax the patient and then a numbing solution is used on the area of the eye. The hardest part of the surgery is for those people who have a problem with staying focused on one object for up to a minute. The most difficult thing to remember after the surgery, and it is very important, is not to rub the eye. Anything involving lotions, creams and eye make-up is to be avoided for a determined amount of time. Activities that involve physical contact are not advised for at least four weeks.

Laser surgery is not for everyone. There are factors that go into determining whether the patient is a good candidate for the procedure. The doctor will sit down with the patient and conduct a review of medical history. It is important to understand exactly what the procedure entails. It does not come without risks and some patients still have to wear corrective lenses even after the surgery. There is some discomfort associated with the surgery. But, there are benefits as well, and it is these benefits that appeal to certain individuals. It might be fashionable at times to wear the coolest frames but they can be a hinder sometimes in day-to-day life. Laser surgery is a viable option to the hassle of maintaining contact lenses or wearing prescription eyewear. It is not perfect, but as technology becomes more advanced, so too does the ability to create perfect or near perfect vision.
